    Description

    This trail combines a challenging riding experience in different landscapes with many possibilities of swimming in rivers, river hiking, canyon exploring, camping, sharing time and accommodation with local people, visiting rare culture monuments, meeting monuments of Albania’s communist dictatorship past. Local traditional food, famous Permeti Raki and wine tasting, livestock rituals and city night life will make this trail very diverse in experiences.

    Meeting river Vjosa the last wild river in Europe riding along it and camping in the river bed is the most beautiful experience of this trail. Vjosa “the blue heart” of Europe along its entire course of over 270 kilometres is untamed ,free flowing and characterized by beautiful canyons, braided river sections, islands, oxbows and meandering stretches. Vjosa River is one of the most complex habitats for spawning fish and migratory birds.

    Departure & return locations: Tirana airport (TIA) or Saranda Port – fly to Corfu (CFU). Transfers extra costs for 2019: Tirana airport to Gjirokastra: €70 round trip per person, 225 km, 3-4 hours Saranda Port to Gjirokastra: €40 round trip per person, 64km, 1 hour

    12 days, 11 nights ,9 riding days
    Day 1

    Travel to Gjirokastra. Accomodation in the hotel. Visit Enver Hoxha’s house, Gjirokastra castle, the church of the Old Bazaar, the mosque of the Bazar and Skenduli house
    Day 2

    Breakfast in the hotel. Riding to the village of Karjan this path also passes along the view of River Drino. Visit of the ruins of the castle of Santa Triada. Picnic lunch in the village of Erind. Accommodation by a local family.
    Day 3

    Breakfast. Ride down along Drino’s valley reaching Andon Poci village, Hundkuq village, Labova of Zhapa. We follow the mountain path to the valley of Cajupi.
    Day 4

    Traditional breakfast. Medieval Caravan pathway through Zagoria. Visit of the monument Rock of Zhej. Afternoon we will climb Hoshteva village. Accomodation and dinner in Hoshteva village.
    Day 5

    Mountain climbing to reach Gjurmemushka mountain pass. We will pass by Maleshova village. Stop for a picnic lunch. Accomodation in a village house in Mbrezhdan. Dinner with the host family.
    Day 6

    After breakfast you will start the ride downhill to reach river Vjosa. Camp again in front of Piskova village. Dinner in Permet. Fishing is also possible if there is interest for it.
    Day 7

    Start the ride from Piskova. Reach Permet town by lunch time. Accomodation in Hotel. Lunch in a small restaurant close by. Afternoon is free.
    Before evining visit Leusa village and Orthodox Church of St. Mary.
    Day 8

    Free riding day,exploring the canyons, swimming. Lunch in a restaurant close to the canyons. Accomodation in Permet. Dinner will be served in a small restaurant close to the hotel
    Day 9

    Climbing Dhembel mountain. Afternoon ride we will pass by the byzantine church and the monastery of Saint Mikhail of Nivan. Dinner will be a delicious mixture of local products. You will spend the night with a village family.
    Day 10

    Wide valleys, steep downhills, green forests and the beauty of Suha River are part of your itinerary before lunch. The lunch break. Later climbing the Swallow Rock and visit the church of Labova of the Cross. Afternoon we will ride to Libohova, visit Libohova’s castle. You will spend the night with a village family.
    Day 11

    Short riding day of 3,5 hours through rolling hills, Drino’s valley. Visit Antigonea National Park. A picnic lunch. Accomodation in Gjirokastra in a hotel. Later in the evening we can have a drink in a popular bar.
    Day 12

    After breakfast at the hotel you will be transferred back to the airport of Tirana.
